- After that window, access is paused. Sometimes the photographer can extend it, sometimes the couple is asked to pay an archive or hosting fee directly.
- High-resolution downloads are often the first thing to disappear, even while small preview images linger for a while.
Different platforms word it differently, but the underlying mechanic is the same: continued access depends on continued payment from someone, usually well after the wedding is a distant memory.
Why do wedding galleries expire in the first place?
It comes down to two things: storage costs money, and subscriptions are a business model.
Storing full-resolution wedding photos (and especially video) takes real disk space, and that space sits on cloud servers that bill every single month. A platform hosting hundreds of thousands of weddings is paying that bill forever if galleries never close. Expiry is how they cap that liability.
The second reason is simpler. Recurring revenue is good business. A gallery that quietly lapses, then offers to come back to life for a fee, turns a one-time wedding into an ongoing line item. There is nothing evil about that, but it is worth naming plainly so you can plan around it.

- Ask about the expiry window before you book. A direct question: “How long does our online gallery stay live, and what happens after that? Is there a fee to keep it or to bring it back?” A clear answer is a green flag. A vague one tells you to download fast.
- Save the films too, not just the photos. Wedding video is where expiry bites hardest, since it is often billed as a separate ongoing cost.
These habits cost you an afternoon and save you a panic years from now.
